Day 1: Ban Prang – Ban Nam Khouy – Approx. 4 hours
After a briefing with the tour guide, depart from the office or your hotel to visit the morning market for food supplies. Head to the Khmu villages along the main road to explore their culture and traditions in Ban Prang. The guide will lead you through the village and provide insights into the Khmu experience. Begin your hike from Ban Prang to Ban Nam Khouy, enjoying the natural beauty of Nam Ha NPA. Stop to forage for edible plants and prepare a picnic lunch using traditional jungle methods. Arrive at the Lahu minority village by 3:00 PM for village sightseeing, enjoying the viewpoint before sunset, and exploring the Lahu culture and traditions.
Day 2: Ban Nam Khouy – Jungle Camp 1 – Approx. 5-6 hours
After breakfast, start trekking along the Nam Ha NPA valley from Ban Nam Khouy to the jungle campsite. Enjoy the primary forest’s natural beauty, stopping to forage for edible plants and learn about herbs and wildlife. Trek through the untouched jungle, follow wildlife trails, and learn jungle survival skills and medicinal plant identification. Climb to an elevation of 1000 meters above sea level, moving into an ancient forest with giant trees and wildlife sounds. Arrive at the campsite around 3-4:00 PM, where you’ll learn to set up a traditional hunter camp and prepare a Khmu jungle meal.
Day 3: Jungle Camp 1 – Jungle Camp 2 – Approx. 4-5 hours
Wake up to the sounds of wildlife before breakfast. Trek across a hill and along the ridgeline through a cool, shady forest until lunch. Continue hiking downhill to a stream with canopies formed by huge trees. Arrive at the campsite before sunset for a swim. Learn about traditional medicinal plants and edible leaves, and prepare a Khmu jungle meal using jungle supplies.
Day 4: Jungle Camp 2 – Ban Nalan – Approx. 3-6 hours
Enjoy the morning animal sounds from the mountain tops around the campsite. After breakfast, choose between two hiking options:
- Option 1 (Approx. 3-4 hours): Hike across the Nam Ha River to the other riverbank, followed by a traditional lunch in Nalan village. Learn about Khmu lifestyle, culture, and traditions in a village awarded the ASEAN Standard of Community-Based Tourism in 2018.
- Option 2 (Approx. 5-6 hours): Cross the Nam Ha River and hike up the other side, through the Nam Ha NPA valley. After lunch, continue hiking downhill to a stream and arrive at the village before sunset. Check into your homestay, walk around the village, and learn about their lifestyle, culture, and traditions. Enjoy a local dinner and tourism activities offered by the community.
Day 5: Ban Nalan – Chalernsouk or Ban Nalan – Nahome – Namlue – Approx. 4-6 hours
Spend the morning visiting the village, tasting Lao coffee or local tea in a bamboo cup, and practicing crossbow shooting and rice pounding by hand. After breakfast, choose between two hiking options:
- Option 1 (Approx. 4-5 hours): Hike uphill through the forest, with a traditional lunch at the end of Nalan village’s forest path. Afterward, enjoy a two-hour hike down the mountain slope to Chalernsouk village, where a tuk-tuk driver will shuttle you back to Luang Namtha.
- Option 2 (Approx. 5-6 hours): Follow the Nam Ha River to Nahome village, passing through Khmu and Lanten minority areas. Learn about the Lanten’s traditional clothes, textile making, natural dyeing, and bamboo paper making. After lunch and visiting the village, hike up a steep hill into the jungle. The challenging trail offers beautiful forest landscapes and canopy views. The final descent passes upland cultivated areas tended by Namlue village people. The trail steepens and can be slippery after rain. End the trek and return to Luang Namtha in the afternoon by tuk-tuk.
